HOUNDED Read-a-Long Chapters 21-25 + epilogue

Kiss Me, I'm Irish is a read-along of HOUNDED by Kevin Hearne, and hosted by Felicia of Geeky Blogger's Book Blog, Amanda of On a Book Bender, Ash of Smash Attack Reads!, Jen of In the Closet with a Bibliophile and me!

Week Four Discussion Questions: Chapters 21-25 + epilogue

1. In a moment of anger, Atticus reveals something about himself that he usually keeps very secret, for his own benefit. Has something similar ever happened to you? Have you ever spilled a closely guarded secret in a moment of excitement or anger or absent-mindedness?
Yes! Ug! I'm horrible at this kind of thing. It's usually when I get angry. I just start shooting off at the mouth and then I'm like AHHHH, NO! I can't really tell you about the secret because then, you know, that wouldn't be good. I did however spout off some things I was thinking once when I was really angry and let's just say they weren't the kind of things one should spout at their husband. LOL! Funny thing is I didn't even know I said them out loud until Hubs told me I did. OOOOOooops! ;)

2. Atticus tells Mrs. MacDonagh, "the universe is exactly the size that your soul can encompass. Some people live in extremely small worlds, and some live in a world of infinite possibility." Then he asks her what she is going to do with the new information she has discovered. What would you do if you found out that other beings were among us? Would you deny it or embrace it?
I've been wishing for AGES that things were other things among us. When I was young I was sure there were, now.....I'd like to think they are. Maybe that's sad. Oh well, I say EMBRACE!!

3. So far, Atticus has revealed a few of his powers and has even shared some power by putting bindings on Granuaile. What do you think has been his coolest or most helpful power so far?
I love his connection to the earth. I think it's so amazing that he can draw upon it's power to create and heal and to fight against others. I love that if he sleeps outside naked *waggles eyebrows* with his tattoos to the dirt that he can heal by morning. I just think the whole earth thing is awesome. I also love how he's proud to be a tree hugger. How in the book, Kevin Hearne has so amazingly balanced the need for power and the need to give back. I think it's important to the story line.

4. Atticus gets pretty pissed when he finds out that Aenghus Óg is drawing power from the Earth and, in turn, killing it. That's when Atticus decides he must fight the old Fae for committing such a heinous offense. What is something you would fight for, even if it meant you might die trying?
My kids. That one is easy. It may not be a cause, but for my kids I would die and not blink twice and I know my Hubs would do the same. It's kind of crazy how you can love anything as much as your children.

Granuaile (pulled from Kevin Hearne's blog via Hailey)

5. What did you think of the final showdown between Atticus and Aenghus Óg? Did it go down the way you expected? Was there anything about their battle that surprised you?
I must say I was NOT expecting the reaper to show up. I mean I knew Atticus would win because how would the series continue without him, but I guess I thought Aenghus Óg would dispatch him himself. I really should have known better because the whole story proved time and again that Aenghus would use anything he could to get at them. I also didn't expect the cold fire to drain him so much. It was crazy how much that removed from the fight.

6. What was your favorite/least favorite part of Hounded? Who was your favorite/least favorite character?
My least favorite character would probably be Flidias. She's just a bitch *clears throat* wench. I know all the other Gods and Goddesses are all tricky, but Flidias just rubs me wrong.

Favorite characters would definitely include the widow, Mrs. MacDonagh and of course Granuaile! I just love her. Admittedly I've read the whole series up to date and I've talked to Kevin about her future with the series, but I just think she's such an awesome character. I love how she interacts with Atticus and how she just knows all this random information. She's just such a perfect fit in the story. LOVE HER!. (and I hope everyone knows it's a given that Atticus and Oberon are my favorites overall!!!)

7. What do you think is coming up next for Atticus? Will you continue reading this series, and if so, what do you hope to see happen in the next book?
I know what happens to Atticus through book 3 because, well....I've read them. LOL! But, I also can't wait to see what happens in Tricked. I mean, after how that last book ended I just can't wait. I'm sad they're going to be leaving AZ though. But Kevin assures me Tricked will be made of awesome. Plus, he's told me some other things and I'm rather excited to see them play out. Can't wait for Tricked!! *SQUEE*

What did everyone think of the read-a-long? I hope everyone had as much fun as we did! If you have any thing that you thought we could have done differently, would mind letting us know in the comment section? We're going to be doing more in the future and I always love input.

Thanks!!! *HUGS*

HOUNDED Read-a-Long Chapters 16-20 - Week 4

Questions for Chapters 16-20
1.  Just after Atticus is shot, Oberon has to "ninja" his way out of the shop and into Hal's Beamer (with the icky air freshener). Have you ever been in a situation where you had to "ninja" your way out and try not to be discovered? If so, what happened?
When I was younger I was always "ninja"-ing my way out of my sisters bedroom with her clothes in hand. For some reason, it's a lot more fun to wear her clothes when she didn't know about it. In my college years, I was always "ninja"-ing myself back into my house. Didn't want my parents to realize when I actually got home. LOL!
2. Atticus's main goal through a large portion of the book is not only protecting Oberon, but also protecting the sword. You are now living in a paranormal world and you need a weapon! What weapon do you choose and what can it do?
I think I'd have to go with a double headed spear. See, there would be enough staff between me and the blades to make me feel comfortable and the adjustable length of my incredibly awesome spear would allow for close or not-so-close range fighting. I must admit that my spear would also come with some very awesome armor, kind of like better-than-kevlar body suit of some sort.

My spear would definitely be able to pierce any object it came into contact with including a body. Ha!! And I think it would be pretty awesome if using some of my body's energy it could shoot out pulses and shock-kill. And yes, if you're wondering, my mind thinks of these things often. :)
3.  To recharge and heal after being shot, Atticus sleeps naked, tattoos to the earth, in a patch of grass near the Civic Center in downtown Scottsdale. Where is the weirdest place you have ever slept?
Okay, this part of the book always cracked me up because the Civic Center is SO busy. There's a library and it's just this huge hubub of activity. Every time I drive by it now I giggle thinking of fictional Atticus sleeping naked there.

Weirdest places slept would include the trampoline, outside in the front yard of my parents house in the grass with my then-boyfriend (now my hubs), the side of the road in a car randomly pulled over and in the house of a Zimbabwe rugby team I had just met in Heidelberg, Germany. That last one would probably be one of the most fun. Although, when I stayed in Ireland, I stayed with Bono's (U2) cousin and slept at their house for a night. I still think the rugby team was my favorite!
4. We finally find out some very interesting information about Granuaile and I don't know about you, but I certainly wasn't expecting to find that she's sharing her head with someone else. What about you, did you expect anything along those lines? If not, what were you expecting concerning Granuaile?
Like I said, I wasn't expecting it. In fact at first I was all confused because how does one share their head with someone else, but I thought it was pretty cool and an original idea. I loved seeing the dual personality and really, I LOVE Granuaile. She's adorable and I love the things she says. She just seems like the perfect offset to Atticus.  I think what I was expecting was just a supernatural creature I had never heard of before. It's nice to get something totally different than what I was expecting.
5.  Laksha is a witch, a truly evil one at that for many of the things she's done in the past. However, she's supposedly seen the error of her ways. Do you think she really has? Would you be willing to trust her? Do you think Atticus is smart to have decided to trust her to help him with the "other" witches?
Laksha seems...weird. I don't think I'd trust her in full and I think it's wise of Atticus to tell her part of his stipulation is that Laksha has to leave Arizona and never come back unless requested. She seems like she does want to change, but I don't think that that kind of personality trait just leaves someone. She seems like a tricky bugger of a witch.

HOUNDED Read-a-Long Chapters 11-15 - Week 3

Questions Week 3, Chapters 11-15

1. I love Leif Helgarson, Viking Vampire, Esq. I have to say that combo makes a pretty cool attorney. If you could have a paranormal/mythical beastie (or combo) covering your tuckus in court, what would you choose and why?
Now see, this one is a difficult question. I mean, I would probably go with genius lawyer in general and if I had a choice sexy as hell would be nice. Now, said genius hottie's paranormal side, I'm not sure. There are so many to pick from and they all have their own features. But, since I'm going for a shorter answer here, I'd say the vampire. I think the mezmerizing thing would be very handy, and if my vamp looks like Jax Teller from Sons of Anarchy that would really just double the awesomeness of it all. I'm just saying. I may have not answered that question properly. I blame Missie and Tina. But, I digress...
2. The police show up to question Atticus about his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon. If you could own any dog breed, what would it be and why? (P.S. Oberon is going on my list of favorite sidekicks!)

A Siberian Husky!!!! I'm not really a dog person, I know, don't beat me down, but if I ever do get a doggie, I've always always wanted a Husky. They are such beautiful creatures and I think one of the coolest things is that they can have differentiating eye colors. As in one eye could be blue and one eye could be brown or yellow or whatever. But really, I've actually read up on that breed, and it's one of my favorites.
3. Malina Sokolowski and the other Sisters of the Three Auroras coven have my antennae up. What is your opinion of them?
I don't trust them yet. I want to trust them, I really do, but I can't bring myself to do it with everything going on.
4. Brighid, goddess of poetry, fire and the forge, gave Atticus the power of Cold Iron, which can be used to fight off that nasty lilttle hellspawn. If you could wield one magical power, what would it be and why?
This one is always difficult for me. Growing up if you would have asked me, I probably would have loved the ability to freeze time. I wanted to be just like Evie from the TV show Out of This World. Plus, I wanted to be able to sleep all the time, LOL!

Now, I think I may love to be able to move from place to place or time to time, kind of like Hiro from the TV show Hero's.  I think because I'd love to be able to visit so many people who don't live near me and because I find different time periods so amazingly interesting.
5. The cops show up at Atticus’ shop to search for poor Oberon, who remains magically hidden throughout the ordeal. What is the one thing you would do if you could remain hidden from sight? I want to hear some good answers for this one!
Oh Ash! I have no idea....*ponders*...well, let's be honest, I'd want to see some muscly nakedness of a particular person who I won't mention because I'd like to remain employed. LOL! Or you know, you always want to know what certain people are thinking about you. O_o

About the Book
Before. Everything was so much better Before. I wasn’t haunted by nightmares, my place at school was secure and my face was flawless. Now, I’m a freak and everything has changed. The worst part is that I can’t remember the night I was sentenced to the shadows. The memory has been stolen from me and I just can’t shake the feeling that someone, something is out there -watching.
tyle="text-align: justify;"> Just when I think I have my life handled, Sam, with his intimidating golden stare and shiver inducing voice, makes me realize that I don’t know anything. He makes me see that my scars don’t matter. That they never mattered. I can’t help but fall for him, completely unknowing that he knows exactly how I got this way. Not knowing he was involved.
***
Heven has no idea how closely death stalks her. She has no idea what I have done to keep her alive. I fear the day she learns my secrets, finds out what I really am. But even then I cannot stop, I vow to make things right. Finally her hunter will be hunted, Heaven and Hell, faith and sin will battle, and we will be victorious. But first, Heven must learn to be what she never imagined.  I know her strength is there – I feel it. If we are to overcome all odds, she must push past her flaws – her frailties – to become much more.
If it sounds like something you'd like to do, run on over to one of the hosting blogs and sign up in the linky! Hope you see you there!

Chapters 6-10 Kiss Me I'm Irish Read-A-Long

Discussion Questions for Chapters 6 — 10

1. In Chapter 6, Atticus goes hunting with Oberon and Flidais. What was supposed to be a fun hunting trip turned rather disastrous. Were you expecting something like this to happen or did it catch you by surprise? Have you ever had something that should have been fun turn disastrous or nearly disastrous?

In all honesty, I definitely wasn't expecting it, but I was very glad to see his necklace provide him some semblance of protection. As for me, more often than naught, something I've been terribly excited for and planned to the hilt turns disastrous. Most of my birthdays turn out that way which is why I have grown to hate them. Also, most of my trips turn out that way. Like when I moved to Albania to be with my husband for the 6 months it took immigration to approve his waiver application...thought it would be good thing....let me just say WORST THING EVER! Me and Albania...we are NOT friends.

Although, admittedly, none of my disasters have never ended in canine mauling. OMG, but I just remembered!!!!! There was this one time I had to cross the border into Greece when I lived in Albania. I was probably 4 or 5 months pregnant and I had to cross with my daughter who was only 1.5 years old and I had to walk over the border. So, I push her in the stroller - pregnant and still sick with morning sickness - from the Albanian side all the way down to the Greek side which is literally down this hill and about a 1/2 mile walk (maybe a tad longer). When I get to the other side and get my passport (and my daughters) stamped (I don't speak Greek either) there are a ton of WILD DOGS! My daughter sees them and gets all excited and when she starts making noise, they come at us. LIKE EFFING COME AT US snarling and racing and...and...!! I really don't know if I've ever been so scared. The Greek border police come running with their batons and help to chase them away, but those dogs were awfully close and OMG, so freaky...lots of sharp teeth and foaming mouths. Thinking about them right now makes my heart pound.

2. We are only briefly introduced to the witches (or, a witch) in chapter 7. What are your first impressions? How much would you trust the witches? Why?

If I was Atticus (and I may be cheating) I would totally NOT trust them. Mostly because the man is 2100 years old, he's had experience with witches in the past and it hasn't turned out pleasant. It kind of sounds like everyone is playing a game and Atticus has to play his part as well.

3. Oberon says, “With dogs you just go up and smell their asses and you know where you stand. It’s so much easier. Why can’t humans do that?” Do you ever wish there was an easier way to find out where you stand with someone (besides Oberon’s suggestion, of course)? In what cases would it be easier or better to hide your true feelings?

HAHAHA! I don't know, ass smelling could be interesting. I definitely wish there was a better way to get to know people so we know where we stand. I hate all the stupid *insert a couple swear words here* games we have to play and I would imagine Atticus does to. I'm 28 and annoyed. I cannot begin to understand how much they would suck at age 2100.

4. Chapter 9 makes Atticus’ life much more difficult: the witches are in some way working with Aeghus Og, Bres comes after Atticus, and more trouble appears at the end of the chapter. Have you made sense of what has happened thus far? Any predictions for what might happen?

I don't think I can answer this one in good conscious, but I'm going to anyway because my conscious has never been the best guide. ;) I think that Atticus is going to try his best to get out of this sticky situation, but Bres was an ass and totally got what he deserved. Plus, I find it hilarious that he wore that armor, so Atticus needed to kill him for that sake. As for what will happen after. There are always ramifications for killing a god. As to what they will be in this instance...I digress....

5. Atticus has had plenty of time to cultivate attitudes and ethics that would allow him to live a very long time. What do you think it is about Atticus that has allowed him to live for as long as he has?

I think that (a) he has a long memory. By that I mean remembering what to stay away from and what he can use to help him through certain times and wars is huge, (b) living humbly. As in he doesn't flaunt and live flamboyantly therefore fading to the background in a nice normal way. And (c) power. His strength and earth powers and how he is always trying to improve them and find ways to strengthen his power have given him a head above others.

PS: If you have any questions for Kevin Hearne, Atticus, or Oberon post them in the comments! Kevin has agreed to answer your pressing questions: aka where do we get an Oberon? Anytime you think of one leave it during the read-a-long - we will gather them up and send them along to Kevin!

HOUNDED Read-a-Long Chapters 1 thru 5

1.  Kevin Hearne had the most perfect beginning for this book:  "There are many perks to living for twenty-one centuries, and foremost among them is bearing witness to the rare birth of genius."  If you were to live for centuries what do you think you would be excited to see?

Seriously, I have no idea. I don't think I'd be good at long life, I'd probably get all stabby and off someone. But, if I had to say something, I'd love to see (a) the world as culture and that kind of thing intrigues me. And (b) I love to see fashion changes. This is mostly because they crack me up! And besides that, imagine the shoe collection I could have...because you know I'm vain like that.

But as I am sure that would (probably not) bore me at some point, I believe (c) I'd love to meet someone who could make me laugh and make me see things in a different light. Sometimes life seems monotonous and I would imagine longevity would make it worse, so meeting someone who truly sees life for what it could be and brings that to others, that's what I would love to see.

2. In the 2nd chapter we learn about the amulet and its protection powers!  Do you think having met the Morrigan and heard about Aenghus Og that it will be enough to protect Atticus?  I mean the Morrigan has a point about hot chicks coming after him and his defenses might be down! He is very male!

I think I'm kind of a cheater since I've read the series, but I think that having the Morrigan on his side is going to be a huge plus. I mean, she is the lady of death and if she isn't willing to take him then that's a huge plus for Atticus. Besides, that amulet ROCKS! I mean, it is bound to his aura I think it's going to be a HUGE tool in protecting him from Aenghus Og.

3. The literary world's coolest dog is introduced in this chapter!  Did you love Oberon immediately?  Show me a picture or describe the type of animal you would love to have as a talking companion! (Cat, Dog, Mouse, Sloth, Horse---what is your pick--pictures please)?

Does Christian Bale count? He's kind of like a bat...

Guess not.

So, if I could have any talking companion, I'd probably go with a Sand Cat. They weigh about 3.5 kg (7.7 pounds) and live well in desert areas which really works well for me and my desert area! Plus, isn't he adorable? I'm going to name him Kingsly or possibly Perry and we will be the best of friends. And he can cut anyone who attempts to hurt me. :)

4. In this chapter Flidais asked Atticus what his name is and then precedes to ask if anyone actually believes he is Greek?  He says nobody pays attention to names here.  Do you know what your name means and where it comes from?  Or do you have a name you wish had?  Let's talk names!

I seriously used to, but I've kind of forgotten. I think Jennifer is of welsh origin or something like that. I know my maiden name is Irish and I know my married name is Albanian. Hubs has told me what it means, but I can't remember except to say that I feel like Hubs may have tyrannical leader in his blood. Just saying.

 5.  We learn about Atticus' lawyers in this chapter, a rather unique combo!  Without jumping ahead, would you hire a lawyer combination of two supernaturals who on the surface would appear to be natural enemies or at the very least two very Alpha attitudes? What would be the positives and negatives of that decision.

If I were in Atticus' shoes, I would. It would make sense if I were a supernatural to hire supernaturals. Mostly because they'd know how to get me out of sticky situations and I wouldn't have to worry about pretending I wasn't *special* (I am special, people!!). As for the Alpha attitudes, I think it works because of the different species. Besides, Leif  would be my Night Man and Hal can be my Day Guy....it totally works. And Leif has that whole vamp thing going for him. The whole mesmerizing thing would help in said sticky situations.

As for the negatives, that much testosterone together, especially with Hal being THE Alpha and Leif being who he is (don't want to give it away), I would imagine fights could ensue. However, they seem to compliment each other nicely.

Awesome questions this week, Felicia! As the book progresses, we're going to hear more about Arizona and the different parts Atticus and Oberon venture into. Below are some pictures I took while I was hiking. Just to give you an idea of what it's like here. :) If you click the pics, I think they'll go to full size. (the bottom 2 are cactus that I thought rather pokey and therefore awesome)

Hope everyone is enjoying the book and we'll see you back next week! (hopefully!)
