Married With Zombies Week 5 - Chapters 21-26

Today marks the last week for our MWZ Scavenger hunt! I hope you've all had a blast! ;)

Scavenger Hunt Schedule:

Week1: Chapters 1-5 (June 1st) - Jen @ In the Closet With a Bibliophile
Week2: Chapters 6-10 (June 8th) - Ashley @ The Bookish Brunette
Week3: Chapters 11-15 (June 15th) - Loretta @ Between the Pages
Week4: Chapters 16-20 (June 22nd) - Tina @ Tina's Book Reviews
Week5: Chapters 21-26 (June 29th) - Missie @ The Unread Reader

Chapters 21-26

1. In Chapter 21, David and Sarah venture into a grocery store to try to find some essentials. Show us a picture of the top three items you consider your essentials when you go shopping.

I love cereal. I grew up on that stuff. And milk is indeed my favorite beverage (along with water). This is not because I'm healthy, this is because I adore milk. Always have. I used to be able to drink 2 gallons by myself in one week. I've cut back substantially, LOL! and added in water. ;) And the bananas are because my family goes through them SOOO fast.

2. Sarah and David travel quite a distance to “visit” a family member. Show us a picture of your most recent family vacation. Who did you visit and where did you go?

Last month my husband, me and my girls went to see my sister in Utah, where she lives. She's my baby sister (baby number eleven of eleven) and we're really close. Above is my sister with my baby girl. :)

3. Sarah refers to David’s sister as the Martha Stewart type because she likes to make things from scratch. Show us a picture a hobby or home project you get enthusiastic about making/doing.

I bake. LOL! It's kind of an obsession. Everything is from scratch and I've been working on this damned yellow cake recipe FOREVER! trying to make it more moist. I'm so much closer, but I'm going to prolly have to make it a couple more times. I also have a supreme weakness for pie.

4. David and Sarah decide to start up their own Zombie exterminators business, and even come up with a name and slogan for it, “S and D Zombie Extermination. We take care of your undead issues.” If you opened up your own zombie killing business, what would you call it, and what would your slogan be?

5. What were your favorite/least favorite parts of Married with Zombies? Aside from David and Sarah, who was your favorite/least favorite character?
I don't think I had a least favorite part, although I still can't understand why David HAD to go into that casino. My least favorite character? Can't think of one now, but I really did love Amanda. She was so dumb and so sweet and wasn't afraid to admit to her weaknesses. In the end, she was wonderful.

6. What do you think is coming up next for David and Sarah? Which do you think has a better chance of survival, their marriage or their humanity? Will you continue reading this series, and if so, what do you hope to see happen in the next book?

I honestly don't know. I know they need to survive for 3 books, LOL! I hope their marriage survives, it gives a girl hope. I'll continue reading, I'm interested to see what happens in book 2.

Questions for Week 4: Chapters16-20

1. In chapter 16 David and Sarah are attacked by freezer zombies in chef attire. Despite its rotten food and disgusting kitchen, lets think about what it could of been before the attack, give me a picture of your dream kitchen or a pic of you cooking your favorite food in your own kitchen... or both!!!

I don't think I could pick just one pic (from my search through the internet) because none had EXACTLY what I want. I want white granite counter tops. My aunt has them and they are GORGEOUS! They have this gold and red hue running through them. So pretty. I also love the white cupboards and how bright they make the kitchen. I HATE being in the dark.

THERE WILL BE A CENTER ISLAND.
I need one so bad. I need the space and room for cooking. I want there to be TONS of light and I want one of those things above the center island for hanging pots and spoons and stuff. There will be BAR STOOLS. I love company in the kitchen.

I NEED A HUGE OVEN AND STOVE TOP! I want a WOLF oven like it's no ones business and I want a gas stovetop and oven. I know everyone wants convection, but I love the way my food turns out in a gas oven. *le sigh*
2. In Chapter 16, David winds up killing those freezer zombies with a blank show me your best one....and yes it must be yours!!!!
 My Meat Knife
Actual Machete

A MACHETE! Okay, I don't own one, but I do have a meat knife that looks very much like one. :) I'm counting it!
3. In Chapter 17 David and Sarah find themselves with some cult like people and wind up trapped. How would you escape? Ropes? Blankets....show me your best.
I think I would have tried the sheets route. Mostly because that's how they do it in the movies. LOL! My rope would have been left in the car. Then again, I never would have ventured into that hotel. ;) Above is my best job at tying sheets. I'm on the first floor so I couldn't really check it out, but I will say I'm almost positive I will fall. My knots SUCK!
4. In Chapter 19 David and Sarah find a surprise in the car they stole...in the midst of crazy its a nice welcome. Now whip me up your favorite one and share......you can include recipes!!
I'm going to say something INSANE...I don't drink.
So, I went to my next choice of drink....STRAWBERRY LEMONADE! :) I have this crazy love of citrus and Lemonade just really gets it. I found this recipe on My Baking Addiction. I recommend fresh strawberries and cooking/cooling them yourself. Everything has a deeper flavor that way. TRUST ME! And, this recipe has an option of Vodka (for those who do drink.) :)
via My Baking Addiction
Click to enlarge Recipe - From My Baking Addiction
Also.... LOL!

5. In chapter 20, Sarah gets to kill a zombie with a cash register, bringing back memories of her worst retail job ever....so tell me whats the worst job you've had......if you can include pictures in your uniform I will die laughing.....or a picture of the place you worked will be good too...:).
Weirdest thing is, I've always done the same thing. My least favorite job though would have been when I did bookkeeping for a roofing company. They wanted me to be at work at 6:00 a.m. I was 19 years old. I couldn't do it. I totally fell asleep at work....REPEATEDLY. I suck. Anyway, I don't have any good uniforms or anything, so here is me how I normally look at work. LOL!

Married With Zombies Week 3 - Chapters 11-15

So starts Week one of the Scavenger Hunt! Enjoy! For all those who need details and want to participate, click the giant button above! (Or on my sidebar!)
*HUGGLES THE ZOMBIE LOVERS/KILLERS*

Scavenger Hunt Schedule:

Week1: Chapters 1-5 (June 1st) - Jen @ In the Closet With a Bibliophile
Week2: Chapters 6-10 (June 8th) - Ashley @ The Bookish Brunette
Week3: Chapters 11-15 (June 15th) - Loretta @ Between the Pages
Week4: Chapters 16-20 (June 22nd) - Tina @ Tina's Book Reviews
Week5: Chapters 21-26 (June 29th) - Missie @ The Unread Reader

Chapters 11-15

1.) In Chapter 11 Sarah, Dave & Amanda were rushed by 4 zombies. At this time Sarah screams something.
SHOW ME YOURS!! Don't have one? That is ok, show me what you would grab outside to protect your self!!

I left it in it's holster. I don't like guns a ton, let's be honest. They make me nervous. I'm apparently squeamish.

*p.s. I'm totally wearing a TANGLED bandaid courtesy of my girls*

2.) At the end of Chapter 12 they are saved by someone looking very "Underworld" awesome. Let me see your best "Slay em' Gear"
Don't want to model your outfit? That is ok, lay it out.. don't forget to add your weapons!!

Um yeah, that is a red leather jacket. I own one. Hehe! We have a wide variety of very sharp knives because I live with 2 chefs. The one on the right even has a holster for a belt. I didn't have them in my house, but my sunglasses would be added to protect my eyes. I forgot to add them, but I'd put in a light scarf to cover my neck and mouth (backspray and all that) and my backpack. :) I did want to add that I realize the shirt needs to be darker, but I didn't remember that whole black ooze and blood thing until AFTER I took the pic and put everything away.
3.) Near the end of Chapter 13 Sarah finds something under the seat to help Dave, that she saved for whenever the need gave in.  What was it? "Strike" your best pose!
Ack! I don't own a lighter. #FAIL! But I have a TON of matches. So, light it up baby! Hubs is all outdoorsy (having lived in a tiny village during communism in a 3rd world country in Eastern Europe. Gah! No electricity sometimes). I'm sure he'll be able to accommodate my lack of a lighter. Hopefully. *crosses fingers*

4.) Nothing very "action pic" happens in Chapters 14 & 15. So this is where you can show me what car you would pic to ride around town, trying to survive. This can totally be a "Google" pic or you can go find one!! Think outside the box!

I drive a VW Jetta. I would most likely end up with that car, but I think this one would be very handy, albeit a gas guzzler. Anyhow, I like the RV capabilities of this truck and it has a back seat 4-door so good enough for my family. Plus, the grill would help with any cars we had to move as would the GIANT engine.

Hubs would prolly go for this car. It's a Mercedes with armoring around it and a bunch of other things I found that I can't remember. I think it even has some kind of GPS programmed into it. It's like zombie proof. You can even drive over a land mine and be fine. LOL!
But, as long as I have these girls and their car seats and the car is in nice working order, that's kind of top priority. After that, I'm gonna go with the top RV/Truck model.
Although I do love my Jetta! (mine is a super dark blue and kinda sparkles) Plus, the Jetta would use less gas and it has a 5-cylinder sports engine so we do have some kick to it.

5.) How are you enjoying the book so FAR?!!!

I'm loving it. I was so sad when Amanda bit the dust, but I am loving it. I love the relationship between Dave and Sarah. I love how they learn to work things out and what is actually important and what isn't.  It's a good relationship thing, I think.

Scavenger Hunt Schedule:

Week5: Chapters 21-26 (June 29th) - Missie @ The Unread Reader

Week 2 Questions:

1.In Chapter 6, Sarah and Dave raid Amanda’s apartment for guns… When they come out they run into their super, Mr. Gonzales, when he tries to attract Sarah: What does she hit? Do you have one of these? You could totally bash some Zombie brains with one!Show me whatcha got! If you don’t have one of these, then anything that you would find in a hallway of an apartment building! (good luck!) lol

I hope I never have a fire because I have NO extinguisher ANYWHERE! But I did find this thing of screwdrivers. No good for fires, but excellent for zombie bashing.
2. In Chapter 7, Sarah and David are watching a news report of the zombie attacks when the doctor on TV attacks the reporter… The news crew steps in and starts bashing the zombie with a _______, grab the nearest similar object (whatever’s handy) that you would use if you were attacked at WORK!

Didn't have a boom mike, LOL! So I opted for my very heavy lamp. :)
3. Chapter 8… Amanda, Sarah and Dave are preparing to head out of town, and while they’re getting in the car, three zombies attack them! Sarah bashes one with the butt of her shot gun as instinct takes over, so whatcha got?
You’re getting in your car, fleeing the city- zombies attack, no guns or knives… What are you going to use to defend yourself??

That's right zombies, I'll kick your ass with my purse. LOL! It was the heaviest thing in my car. I'm so dead one day.
4. In Chapter 9 & 10 there aren’t any zombie killings… That we could replicate!!!
So, give me a couple of your favorite quotes from Chapters 5-10!!!

So you killed him with what now?"

"I tried that Dr. Phil book at first"..."And I finished it off with the toilet seat. Just so you know, you left it up again. That drives me crazy.”

“Address one issue at a time. You can't load gasoline, pick up food, AND kill fifteen zombies at once”

“Find creative ways to have fun together. Looting is really underrated.”

I love the chapter headings the best! LMAO!

5.  How do you feel about the book up to this point? Any thoughts you want to share?
It really just gets better and better. I love the fighting between Sarah and Dave. It makes the zombie hordes even better and their relationship more believable. Can't wait to see what adventures we get to next!

Tour of Italy Week Kick off - Charade Tour

This week is the kick off for the Tour of Italy Week on the Heven and Hell Tour: Charade! I have been looking forward to this week during the tour since March!

So what is the Tour of Italy Week? It’s a celebration of all things Italian because Sam and Heven (and their crew) all take a trip to Italy in the second novel of the Heven and Hell Series, Charade.

During this week you will take a trip to Italy with all of use and it won’t cost you anything! In fact, you might actually win some really cool prizes! So sit back and relax for a few minutes each day this week and take a mini vacation with us all!
What kinds of things can you expect on the Tour of Italy? Recipes, Sightseeing and exclusive glances inside Heven’s travel Diary that she took to Italy with her. There will also be exclusive photographs of Heven and Sam (and maybe Cole!) on their trip! There will even be a special post from Kimber telling us (and showing us with photos) about the fantastic shopping that she did while in Italy.

Look for a couple giveaways throughout the week and then one big giveaway on Friday to wrap up Tour of Italy Week where you will have the chance to win Heven’s travel diary, complete with all her posts and photographs.
So let’s get this Tour of Italy started!

The Tour of Italy begins with a recipe of Epic Italian Proportions and it is brought to us by our hostess with the mostess, Jen! I hear Jen is quite the talent in the kitchen so who better than to deliver us an Italian good eats?

I know I've been absent for forever, but I'm back and going strong with hazelnuts. That's right, hazelnuts. This week I'm kicking off the Italy Tour for Charade (by Cambria Hebert) and I have a new recipe for you. For anyone who isn't a regular reader of the blog, you can click the words "In Which I Am Well Informed" to read the intro post.

This week on In Which I Am Well Informed, I'm welcoming you all to Italy with Baci Brownies! According to the recipe from whence I found this recipe (Christie's Corner) they came from the idea of Baci Chocolate. Christie gives a little blurb on her blog about baci chocolate, baci meaning "kisses" in Italian, but the history and description buff in me wanted a little more. So, thank the heavens for Google. According to Perugina an Italian based company that has made the little chocolates since 1922 dark chocolate mixed with a praline hazelnut center, wrapped with tiny little romantic love notes, baci chocolate has been a worldwide sensation for decades.

Those of you from America may not realize it, (which is really all I can speak for because I am American) but a lot of different cultures don't use the phrase "I love you" as a regular expression to show their love. This I actually discovered from my own experience, having a foreigner for a husband. In his culture they use the phrases "zemra ime" which directly translates to "my heart" or "shpirti im" which directly translates to "my soul". They have some others, but these are 2 of the most widely used from my husbands area. They rarely use the phrase "I love you" which I find fascinating.

In Italy, according to Perugina's website, the baci chocolate has become such an edition into the culture that people use the different sayings from the wrappers as ways to express their love for others. One example is "“Tubiamo!” (let’s “tube”), which refers to the youthful tube-shaped Baci Perugina debuted in the 1980s, is a popular way for teenagers to express excitement and fun." (Perugina's website - baci history).

Which so brings me to the BACI BROWNIES! Otherwise known as Brownie Kisses, they would have to be one of the most delicious brownies I've ever made, albeit very rich. The original recipe can be found on Christie's Corner (as well as below) as are some of my pictures. I have a LOVE of hazelnuts and feel that Americans do not use them as often as they should!!!!!
1. Toast your hazelnuts: before you start any part of the recipe, toast the hazelnuts. The reason being that if you attempt to do this at the same time as starting your batter (which involves melting butter and chopped chocolate together) you may end up with not enough hands and possible burnt chocolate. I found my hazelnuts at SPROUTS Grocery which is a health food store here and carries a huge nut selection. I'm also warning you, they are expensive ($7.99 a pound). I don't think I toasted mine long enough and rubbing off the shell takes some time dedication [and patience]. I ended up stopping and not caring as the "shell" is more of a "skin" anyway. Tasted good to me.
2. With a wire whip, mix flour, baking powder and salt: This is important. I know people think it's an extra step to mix it before you put it into the mixer/pot/main bowl, but it's important. It helps to create a consistent mixture of all the dry ingredients so everything (i.e. baking powder) is mixed evenly throughout. It also helps with the air bubbles that go into making baked goods making them smaller and such. You don't need to mix it a ton, just mix until blended.

 3. Melt butter & chopped chocolate: First you'll melt your butter and chocolate together. KEEP HEAT ON LOW. Yes, it takes longer to melt, but your chocolate won't burn.

4. Mix in sugar with wire whip, continuously mixing. Then with a rubber spatula, mix in flour mixture above. Then add 1/3 nuts coarsely chopped: In the future, when I do this again, I'm going to add 1/2 the nuts some finely chopped and some coarsely chopped. I wanted more of a nutty flavor in my brownie base and more finely chopped nuts throughout, I think, would have accomplished that. Then I still could have had my crunchy nuts, too!

5. Pour into buttered 9x13 dish: In the original recipe it tells you to put TIN FOIL at the bottom of the pan and then butter that. The point is to pull the brownies out and making them easier to cut. I skipped this because I like my brownies in the dish and my corningware doesn't stick easy. You do what you like.

6. Mix ingredients for Nutella Swirl and dollop on top: place the dollops all over, edges included.
7. Using a [butter] knife, swirl around the Nutella: You don't want to mix it, otherwise you'd use a spoon. You want a swirl on the top, so you stick in your knife and swirl it around. If you click the picture above, it will enlarge and you can see my swirl design.
 8. Top with remaining nuts: in the original recipe, this is 2/3 of the nuts. In my future recipe, this is going to be less, more like 1/3 of the nuts and I will be cutting them with a knife. I think the top nuts should have been a little bigger than some of the smaller pieces I "accidentally" chopped. Oops!
9. Bake in a preheated 325F oven (depending on your oven - mine was on 350F) for 35-38 min: You won't necessarily be able to stick a toothpick in it to see if it's done, so when the edges pull from the sides and the center is stable, pull it out. You'll be able to touch the center with your finger and it won't sink in, it'll be more springy. Ummmmm....don't push too hard, though. It's not a rock, it's brownies.
10. Cut and serve: These brownies are rich, so I recommend you cut them smaller and serve with gelato (aka vanilla ice cream/praline ice cream).

That's my finished product. That probably would have served 2 adults. When I met my husband he worked in a fine dining Italian restaurant in Phoenix (I was their bookkeeper, LOL). Anyway, Hubs is always telling me it's all about the display. The food could be delicious, but if you don't display it nicely then it just doesn't look as appealing. And while brownies would probably look appealing no matter what, I decided to decorate my plate. I created a little chocolate sauce by melting 1/2 ounce unsweetened chocolate with 4 TBS butter (ON LOW HEAT) and then added powdered sugar (to taste - about 1/2 cup-3/4 cup) and then added whipping cream until it was the right consistency and texture. We have random chefy items in our house, so I used a squeeze bottle with a skinny tip (kind of like an old fashioned mustard bottle) to create the swirl. I added the dots at the end. Then shaved dark chocolate over the top for affect. and TADA!

And if you're wondering....the brownies are pretty much made of awesome and epic swirled with moisture and hazelnut deliciousness. When I make them again, I'm going to add a praline layer between the Nutella swirl and the brownie batter.

Recipe (directly copied from Christie's Corner)

Ingredients
  • 1 cup hazelnuts (about 4 1/2 ounces)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons (3/4 cup) unsalted butter
  • 6 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Nutella swirl
  • 1/2 cup Nutella
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Line a 9 X 13-inch baking pan with foil, making sure there’s at least a 2-inch overhang on both of the short sides. Gently press the foil into the corners. Butter the foil.
  2. Place the hazelnuts on a small baking sheet and toast in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once or twice, until lightly golden. Spill the nuts onto a dish towel and rub them with the towel to loosen and remove most of the skin. Transfer the nuts to a cutting board and chop coarsely.
  3. Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt in a small bowl.
  4. Melt the butter and chocolate in a large saucepan over very low heat, stirring often, until smooth. Remove from the heat and whisk in the sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking after each addition. Mix in the vanilla. Using a rubber spatula, stir in the flour mixture until fully incorporated, then stir in one-third of the toasted hazelnuts. Spread the batter in the prepared pan.
  5. For the Nutella Swirl: Combine the Nutella, egg and flour in a glass measuring cup and stir with a fork until thoroughly blended. Drop small spoonfuls of the Nutella mixture evenly over the brownie batter. Use a knife to gently swirl it through the batter.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining hazelnuts on top. Bake in the middle of the oven for 35 to 38 minutes or until the top is set and the edges have begun to pull away from the sides of the pan. Don’t overbake or the edges will be dry. Cool in the pan on a rack for at least 2 hours.
  7. Holding onto the two foil ends, lift the brownie up and onto a cutting board. Peel the foil away from the sides of the brownie. Cut lengthwise into quarters, then cut crosswise into 8 strips to yield 32 bars. Because these are so rich, you can also cut them into 10 or 12 strips to make 40 or 48 bars, respectively.
  8. Store layered between sheets of wax paper in an airtight container for up to 4 days; or refrigerate, tightly wrapped for up to 1 week; or freeze for up to 2 months.

Welcome to Italy, my lovlies!!

Join us on the rest of the tour to see more Italian magic!

About the book:

Dying at the hands of a psycho was a shock. Having my life returned to me by an angel was incredible. Being named a Supernatural Treasure and being given Sam as my guard was pretty darn awesome. Acquiring a debt for it all—well, I should have seen it coming.
Now here we are, fighting demons from Hell, caring for a boy that I just don’t trust, and traveling to faraway places to return a treasure to its rightful place. Nothing is as it seems. Everyone wears a mask; everyone puts on a charade. It’s up to us to separate the truth from the lies and reality from fiction. A hard task when my new reality involves fallen angels, witches and dragons… and did I mention Hell?
Anchoring me down through it all is Sam. Sam, who must face tragedies of his own and is put to the test again and again.
If we fail in our task, life as we know it—life as you know it—will end. Forever.
